Wynphriss (Wyn) Venomsong is a bard and, occasionally, an assassin who prefers contracts that pay well and don’t ask questions. After killing a corrupt baron during a spring festival, she expects the job to end like all the others—with a quiet escape and a heavy purse.

Instead, the corpse briefly rises to deliver a cryptic message from a dark power promising the conquest of the world.

At the same time, Edrin Hale, an aging adventurer with a magical sword and a history of terrible decisions, is trying to outrun gambling debts that could get him killed.

When assassins begin hunting them both, and the kingdom’s greatest champion is mysteriously murdered, Wyn and Edrin are forced into an uneasy partnership. Unfortunately, they may be the only people standing between a demonic conspiracy and the end of the realm. The problem is simple: neither of them has any interest in saving the world.
